The Financial Times has appointed James Fontanella-Khan as US finance editor in New York to lead a newly formed team that brings corporate finance, banking and asset management under one tent.
In this role, Fontanella-Khan will lead coverage of the financial services industry in the US, overseeing reporting on Wall Street’s biggest banks as well as private equity firms, asset managers and hedge funds. He will also work closely with the FT’s DC bureau on the intersection of Wall Street and politics.
Fontanella-Khan joined the FT in 2005 and has since held a variety of roles, including on the London news desk and as a correspondent in Brussels, New Delhi and Mumbai. He also served as US M&A correspondent and most recently as US corporate finance and deals editor. Fontanella-Khan is the co-creator of Due Diligence, the FT’s premium daily briefing on corporate finance, M&A and private equity.
Brooke Masters, US managing editor, said, “Sectors across the financial services industry are increasingly interconnected – merging these teams allows us to meet that moment and deliver more of the silo-busting journalism our readers rely on. With his deep industry knowledge, James is well positioned to lead this team and strengthen our financial coverage.”
The merging of the corporate finance, banking and asset management teams has created several new appointments. Antoine Gara has been appointed deals and private equity editor to lead the FT’s coverage of dealmaking and the rapidly evolving private capital landscape. Oliver Barnes has been named US deals and activism correspondent, reporting on high-profile mergers and acquisitions, shareholder activism and corporate strategy.
Furthermore, Eric Platt has been promoted to US investment editor to oversee coverage of asset management, including major firms such as BlackRock, while continuing to report on private credit and Berkshire Hathaway. Harriet Clarfelt has also been appointed US asset management correspondent to report on investment and wealth management.
