21 January 2020: Financial Times editor Roula Khalaf has today announced several new roles to strengthen digital leadership in the newsroom. 

Robert Shrimsley becomes UK editor at large, while Janine Gibson, who joined the FT from Buzzfeed last May, will take on a new role as head of digital platforms and projects. Renée Kaplan has been promoted to head of digital editorial development. 

“This is a defining time for the FT as we deepen our digital transformation and sharpen our focus on original stories that bring clarity to the unpredictable new normal,” said editor Roula Khalaf. 

“I am immensely excited about this fantastic new team of editors who bring a huge amount of skill, vision and experience to their new roles. They will help our global team of talented FT correspondents and editors produce digital and data-driven journalism with insight and impact,” she continued.

In his new role, Robert Shrimsley will work closely with Khalaf to steer the FT’s UK coverage in the post-Brexit era. He will continue to write his popular, award-winning column as UK chief political commentator. 

Janine Gibson, who orchestrated the FT’s award-winning Corbyn Revolution series, will oversee the data visualisation, video, and investigative teams. She will also oversee visual changes to FT.com and support US managing editor Peter Spiegel with the FT’s growth strategy in America. Gibson will work closely with news editor Matthew Garrahan on long-term projects and investigations.

As head of digital editorial development, Renée Kaplan will continue to oversee the FT’s newsletter and audio strategy while assuming responsibility for new editorial products such as Trade Secrets and Tech Scroll Asia. She was previously the head of audience and content strategies and is succeeded by Hannah Sarney who becomes the FT’s new head of audience engagement. 

Since taking up her position as editor, Khalaf has appointed Patrick Jenkins as deputy editor, Tobias Buck as managing editor and hired Peter Foster from the Telegraph as public policy editor. Peggy Hollinger has been appointed international business editor effective March 2 and companies editor Tom Braithwaite has added financial services coverage to his remit. 

This week, the FT announced it would be sharpening its coverage of the City of London with several new editorial appointments, reflecting a greater emphasis on trenchant commentary and in-depth corporate reporting.
