Financial Times triumphs at the British Press Awards
14 March 2018: The Financial Times was honoured in four categories at the British Press Awards last night, including winning the highly coveted Newspaper of the Year award.
The judges said the FT had “an outstanding year” and “continues to be an authoritative and global must-read.” They noted that “the paper’s strikingly successful business model is underpinned by high quality journalism - a great feat of management and organisation as well as editorial excellence” and that the FT had “redefined itself as truly multimedia and relevant outside of those purely interested in finance.”
FT editor Lionel Barber said: “These awards are testament to the strength of our reporting and the exceptional talent of our editorial team. I am proud that so many of our reporters, columnists and editors have been recognised for their brilliant and innovative journalism.”
The FT won in the following categories:
- Newspaper of the Year
- News Team of the Year
For The Europopulists project, which combined data analysis and in-depth interviews with voters ahead of the elections in Netherlands, France and Germany, to get to the roots of the populist movement shaking the political establishment.
- Business and Finance Journalist of the Year
Matt Garrahan was recognised for his reporting on Weinstein, Murdoch, and the rise of streaming.
- Environment Journalist of the Year
Pilita Clark won the award for the second year in a row for her articles on renewable energy, Elon Musk’s plans for Mars and Bloomberg’s London office.
Tom Burgis was highly commended in the Business and Finance Journalist of the Year category for his in-depth investigative reporting on Glencore, London’s secrets industry and Trump’s connection to Kazakh dirty money. David Crow was highly commended in the Science Journalist of the Year category for his reporting on the revolution in bio-pharmaceuticals, gene therapy and genetic testing.
The Press Awards celebrate the best of British journalism and are organised by the Society of Editors. The full list of winners can be found here.
