13 December 2019: FT Weekend has been named best weekly newspaper and the FT was honoured in six categories at the European Newspaper Awards, Europe’s largest newspaper design competition. 

FT Weekend scooped one of five top prizes and was praised by the judges for its “exemplary, classically elegant design.” 

Judges remarked: “It is part of an extraordinary success story: the Financial Times has more than a million subscribers, with digital subscriptions accounting for more than three quarters of the total circulation. Because of the importance of the online product, the FT has also won several awards in the online categories of the European Newspaper Awards.”

The FT’s video team also received the judges special recognition award for their innovative short film on the impact of Brexit: “Climate change: what do you want me to say?”. The film was produced and directed by Juliet Riddell; written by Chris Thorpe and edited by Tom Hannen.

Now in its 21st year, The European Newspaper Awards attracted more than 4,000 entries from 184 newspapers in 25 countries. The awards highlight international trends in print and online news, and promote the exchange of creative ideas in Europe.
