20 January 2020: The Financial Times is sharpening its coverage of the City of London with several new editorial appointments, reflecting a greater emphasis on trenchant commentary and in-depth corporate reporting.

As part of the changes, Kate Burgess becomes editor of the Lombard column - the FT’s daily opinion section on UK companies. The column will be relaunched today with a stronger focus on the City’s role in financing British business. It will complement a refreshed FT City Bulletin (previously Opening Quote), an early-morning newsletter covering breaking global business news.

Burgess, a former City broker and long-time business and finance writer at the FT, will be joined at Lombard by City correspondent Cat Rutter Pooley, a former corporate lawyer and UK companies/City reporter with expertise in M&A, equity capital markets and corporate governance. Matthew Vincent moves from Lombard to a new role covering regulation and professional services from next month. He will also edit the City Insider diary column.

Commenting on the hires FT editor Roula Khalaf said, “These appointments will ensure the Financial Times keeps delivering agenda-setting commentary on the biggest developments affecting the City of London. As the UK forges new global trade and business relationships post-Brexit, the FT will remain a trusted guide to readers who want the best news and analysis on companies, financial markets, and the business impact of political events.”
