20 November 2017: Last night, FT journalists Sarah O’Connor and Laura Pitel were honoured for their reporting at the Foreign Press Association Media Awards (FPAs).
Sarah O'Connor’s piece, When Your Boss is an Algorithm, was named Financial and Economic Story of the Year and Laura Pitel’s article, Erdogan's informers: Turkey's descent into fear and betrayal, was awarded Print & Web Feature Story of the Year.
O’Connor’s piece explored the gig economy where people are managed not by humans but by the apps on their phones. The judges said the article was “a perfect example of good financial journalism, a real eye-opener, about people and not just numbers.”
Pitel’s feature described the climate of fear and suspicion in Erdogan’s Turkey after the attempted coup and the authorities subsequent crackdown on Turkish citizens. The award-winning “stand-out piece” was described by the judges as a “well-written, well researched story which painted the atmosphere of mistrust and fear so well”.
The FPA Media Awards recognise excellence in journalism and present an opportunity for British journalists to be celebrated and recognized on an international scale.
