12 June 2019: Today, the Financial Times introduces Story Playbook, a set of digital templates built for reporters and editors. The tool was created with readers’ needs in mind and aims to provide newsrooms with an alternative to the traditional 600-800 word article format.

The five newly created Story Playbook templates are available publicly on the FT’s GitHub account, alongside other open-sourced resources such as the FT’s Visual Vocabulary and Projects Toolkit.

This development of Story Playbook comes as part of a larger shift towards innovative digital and visual storytelling at the FT, where a recently created team of creative producers and digital editors has been embedded in the main news desks.

The five Playbook templates include:

  • Profile Cards - an article that introduces a group of people or other entities to the reader
  • Charticle - an article that explains changes, or a trend, using a series of charts and graphs
  • Timeline Story - an easy-to-update article that catches readers up on the story so far
  • Reader Response - an article collecting the best of reader responses, either to a callout or in the comments section of a big story
  • Photo essay - an article that lets readers see what has happened
