The Financial Times today announces the appointment of James Lamont as managing editor. In his new role, Lamont will have global responsibility for staffing and strategic planning for the FT’s editorial department. He will relocate to London from New Delhi where he has been the FT’s South Asia bureau chief since 2008.

Lionel Barber, editor of the Financial Times, said: “James Lamont is an outstanding FT journalist and foreign correspondent, having served in Johannesburg and as South Asia bureau chief. He also has important management experience, having worked as weekend news editor, world news editor, and editor of Business Report, South Africa’s largest circulation business daily.”

Lamont first joined the Financial Times in 2001 as FT as Southern Africa bureau chief. He replaces Lisa Macleod who becomes an assistant editor.
