Demetri Sevastopulo has been appointed Asia News Editor for the Financial Times. Based in Hong Kong, he is responsible for the Financial Times newsgathering operation throughout the Asia Pacific region, for the presentation of Asian news in all global editions of the newspaperand for Asian news coverage on FT.com.

Prior to this, Demetri was Pentagon & intelligence correspondent for the Financial Times, covering defence, intelligence, terrorism, homeland security and US foreign policy issues in the Washington bureau from 2004. He joined the bureau as Business Correspondent in 2002 following a brief stint in the Tokyo bureau.

Demetri began his career as a foreign exchange derivatives trader at Citibank in Japan and later covered the Japanese economy for Bloomberg News in Tokyo. An Irish national, he graduated from Trinity College, Dublin, with an undergraduate degree in business studies.

Demetri has a master’s degree in East Asian studies from Harvard University where he was also a teaching fellow in Japanese and Chinese history. He also studied at Beijing University and Sophia University, and speaks fluent Japanese and (rusty) Mandarin Chinese.

The Financial Times’ former Asia News Editor Kevin Brown has moved to take the post of Asia news correspondent based in Singapore. His brief is to cover Singapore and Malaysia for the newspaper and FT.com, and to write more generally about the Asia region, with a special focus on the ASEAN countries, Australia and New Zealand.
