The Financial Times Moscow bureau chief, Charles Clover, today won a Martha Gellhorn Special Award for Journalism. Clover, who was named Foreign Reporter of the Year at the 2011 British Press Awards, was one of four chosen journalists “whose work has penetrated the established version of events and told an unpalatable truth that exposes establishment propaganda, or ‘official drivel’, as Martha Gellhorn called it”.

The judges said: “Charles Clover’s investigation into far-right gangs in Russia and their links to the government was meticulous, insightful and brave.”

Julian Assange scooped the top UK award.
